Qserv is a distributed parallel query execution system designed to answer queries specified using a subset of SQL over the catalogs produced by LSST data releases. In order to meet the scalability requirements, it loads spatial tables in fragments defined by 2-D boxes in the celestial sphere. Queries are thus executed by breaking them up into pieces to be executed on these fragments, which are distributed and (ideally) replicated among a set of nodes in a qserv cluster.
